THRICE CAPTURED

Thrice Captured

Serendipitous, this
timely, divine
Summer escapee, slipped free
anticipating autumn
Freefall flight suspended,
caught, confined, quiescent
arrested by arachnid’s craft (nature’s design)
then plucked, preserved in picture (yours)
and captured in words
(mine)

THE GIFT

“For you,” she said
offering up her most prized
possession (herself) willingly
genuinely generous

In wonder and awe
her glorious gift was accepted
but time debrides,
wonder wears,
awe erodes,
glory gives over to want
and need and
greed

Like kudzu vine, they overcame her
overreaching, encroaching, choking
Virginia creepers, mile-a-minute
invasive, overrunning, overriding
grasping, greeding,
never once conceding
(much less ruing)
symbiosis might be their undoing

TWINS SPINNING (haiku)

One overhead spins
stirring air, cooling the room
soothing heated skin

One, in the mirror
reflects, refracts fluorescence
shimmering twilight

FIRE FLIES

"mock up" of fireflies by PSC -- not an actual photograph :-))

Fire Flies

Frustration flames,
conflagrant conflict
burns a hole in my belly

I step outside
into pitch blackness
seeking escape

Fireflies flicker
on ebony canvas
sparking flights of fancy

JOE'S BAR & GRILL

“Joe’s Bar & Grill”

Had I heard the familiar “Your dime – speak!”
I might have recognized his voice, stayed on the line,
beseeched a ride home from the library.

But this foreign phrase persuaded me
I must have misdialed or been badly connected,
so I stammered an apology, hung up the phone
embarrassed, dialed a neighbor
(with my last dime) to deliver the message.
His truck pulled up a short time later.

He was silent as I scrambled in, but
mischief snickered in his eyes, and a smile
lingered on his lips.

A remembrance of my father (ever the practical joker) for Father's Day.
You are missed, Dad.

Astronomer

It comes to you
in a moment of quiet
contemplation, in the solid
silent complete
absence of
sound

Focused
on mystical
blue-green orb,
hung like an ornament
in infinite black tapestry
you come to understand
we are, all of us,
guests in this
Garden of
Eden
