Only This

Only This

If I could, I’d make you heir to water –

clean, pristine,

sans bottle caps & cellophane wraps;

non-toxic rivers & lakes and

oceans of sea turtles, manatees and whales.

I’d leave you air unsullied,

soil unspoiled

and teeming with trees & native wildflowers

pollinated by a plentitude of species

of butterflies & bees.

I would will you forests –

 swamps, jungles and savannahs

peopled by pandas, elephants,

gorillas, tigers & rhinos;

and a wide sky

occupied by all orders of birds.

If I could, I’d bequeath you

this utopia, nirvana, Camelot, Eden

– perfect planet –

strong, balanced, resilient,

self-sufficient, self-sustaining.

And I’d bestow such an abiding love

that you would (could)

ever

assume

only this:

your just right-

ful place

with-

in

it.
