Boys of Summer

Boys of Summer

Long, loose, lank,
devil-may-care, they’re
conceived in starlight
and moon glow,
birthed by water,
fostered in the wind,
untamed, unsettled, unbroken.

It’s summertime, and clocks
can’t confine them.

They rise when they desire,
dress in swim trunks, sun-browned skin,
 spend days carelessly,
punctuated by sunshine;
pitching the present
like pennies against a wall,
unconcerned at their forfeiture.

September’s so very far away
under a July firefly sky.

They’re just playing
with matches,
still unaware
how fires are started.

  1. Really enjoyed the photo and the poem. I've just taken my kids to a place I used to spend my childhood summers. The trip and your poem evoke lots of memories of wild (no silly helmets, of course) bike riding, lake swimming, tree climbing.. Good times.

  2. I love the shape this piece takes with those two line separations. My favorite is this,

    "conceived in starlight
    and moon glow,"

The entirety is so rich and the closing is brilliant! Well done my friend!! :)

I loved it AGAIN!! Glad you shared this...those lines cause me to cringe...it's amazing how perspective changes when we become adults...as soon as summer started I was thinking of winter again...shame on me...wood to get. :( Sigh...

    1. Ahhh, thanks, Hannah! Happy to see you stopped by to comment. It's true, the older we get the faster time seems to fly, doesn't it? Glad you enjoyed the poem... again. :)

Pamela, love the form you chose. This poem is pure magic and brings back so many memories of my son and now grandsons.
