EXILED

Wanting
only to play,
anxious, excited, he
lined up with the “big boys”
hoping to hear his name called;
one by one they cherry-picked, each name
another dent in his tin can confidence
until only he remained,
(faux smile pasted)
in place

THE LAST STRAW

The Last Straw

he’s had it up to here with her
moody, silent treatment, selfish ways;
damn sick of her solo dinners,
doing her own laundry – omitting his.
Used to be, she’d meet him at the door,
all warm smiles and willing; now it seemed,
he let himself in nightly to a dark house,
silent sofa bearing spare blanket, his pillow,
their bedroom door locked.  this night
would be different.  tonight he’d tell her
it had to stop.  time for things to go
back to the way they were.  he rams his
key in the lock, hard twist of wrist, tight
jerk fails to budge mechanism;  she’s changed
the locks and it’s the last straw.  he pummels,
fists flailing, boots drubbing the door; stopping
only when the sash above bangs open, he
watches stunned, as his belongings hurtle down
landing in a lump on the lawn

SUPERVISING SPRING

photo by PSC

Supervising Spring

Best job I ever had (although it doesn’t pay).
I monitor her progress every single day.
“A bit more green”, (that’s what I say)
“and yellow too, and maybe blue”.

Then:  “sprinkling violets in the lea?
That idea’s just fine with me!”
And:  “make the robin’s song more loud;
give the sky one fluffy cloud”
(just to break up all that blue --
it’s the least that she could do).

Does she listen as I go?
Sometimes yes, and sometimes no.
It’s uncertain, that’s the thing,
what the coming days will bring,
when you’re supervising spring.

NOTE:  Not a prompted PAD poem -- that will come later, I hope -- just a gift of the season!

Otter Believe It (haiku)

You otter believe!
Both of us startled --
hidden (not hiding) from each.

public domain photo

NOTE:  I'm pretty sure that it was an otter that I surprised this morning as I was picking up at the reservoir.  Startled by our sudden face-to-face, he squeaked, dashed past me and dove into the water to swim away, and I was too surprised (and too slow) to catch a picture of him.  Thank you public domain!

To NoAnyEveryOnly One

To NoAnyEveryOnly One

Please accept (or don’t)
this most timely (premature/belated)
distinctly generic, comprehensive, pitiful (un-)apology:

I’m (not) sorry for all those (some)times
I have(n’t) listenedheard what you never did(n’t) say;
nor for putting/speaking/shutting up when I should(n’t) have;
likewise, that I could not be/do/become
what you  wanted/needed/expected of me,
when all I ever owed no/any/every/only/some one (me)
was to be who I only ever really was

YOUR PLACE OR MINE?

photos by PSC

Your Place or Mine?

I drop by daily (physically or
metaphysically) soaking in spiritual
(or maybe emotional) presence (here & now),
this place and you (toad, turtle, lady slipper,
chipmunk, cardinal, cattails, buttonbush,
butterfly, fox, fawn, firefly, dragonfly,
fringed polygala,…) who live your entire life
(short though that may be -- compared
to only my time so far) in this locale;
still, when we chance to meet, I reflect upon
who is visiting whom(?) until I settle on this
(erstwhile conclusion):  we are (all of us)
merely guests in this place
for a tiny slice of time

SPRING POETS

Spring Poets

Like spring peepers we start
our early morning calling
collective subconscious
soft solo whispers in the mist
poetic sunrise synchronicity
trill and warble growing louder
each building upon another’s song
adrenaline rush ever adding voices
until everyone is singing
in harmonious cacophony
