All Hallows
Even
Halfway to winter, well into autumn,
preparing for seasonable slumber, I am
tucked away beneath several layers,
wanting only to be undisturbed.
A grumbling stomach
sends me foraging for food –
a night like any other, I think –
only the mood is somewhat
skewed.
My stomping ground, normally so peaceful, placid –
teems with people tonight – my plundering interrupted
by thunderous skipping, jumping, laughter, shrieking;
feet shuffle, scuffle, leaves and bags rustle,
doors open & close, lights flash,
vehicles roll slowly past.
Curious scent of sweets, chocolate breezes, tempt
but something tells me to steer clear of the street;
I lumber away, skulk back to my lair,
hunger lingering,
still
