Roots (2016 April PAD - Day 6)

photo - courtesy of www.FridaKahlo.org

Roots

She’s rooted in the future.
Seeds yielded, sown,
blown to the four winds
to reappear – far from here
in space and time

her fruits will flourish:
her eyes shine,
her smile curve,
radiate in future faces,
unknown, unfamiliar places

and all
because
she
was love(d).

Fishin’ for Complement (2016 April PAD - Day 5)

Fishin’ for Complement

My ex-husband was a worm.

Now, we was just young
and stupid (some might say
 inexperienced)
when my papa caught us
gettin’ some experience,
(if you know what I mean),
in his boat while we was
s’posed to be fishin’.  Well,

the compliments was flyin’, and
Papa didn’t fancy the way we was
complementin’ each other
(if you know what I mean). So,

we had us a shotgun weddin’
and two baby boys
before the marriage
(and my slick, slippery man)
went south.

My papa, he was more
of a daddy to those two boys
than their own pa ever was.

Papa just loved to take us all
fishin’ in his boat.
The boys, they enjoyed it too –
still do. But me, I never
took much of a likin’ to it.
Seems like

whenever I watch one of my boys
laughin’ with his granddaddy,
slippin’ a night crawler,
 on his hook,
I see it squirm,
and I just can’t help
but feel sorry
for that worm.

April, she’s (2016 April PAD - Day 4)

all photos PSC / Apr 2016

April, she’s

distant,
cool;
and I feel
such a fool
believing that she
was warming up
to me
when only last week
she was sunshiny, bright,
all laughter and light.

Well, today
she’s wholly…
wintry;

Arctic and bitter –
a bone-chilling, shiver-
y mass of crystalline frost.

Still, I'm certain
that all
is not lost;

Yes, I’m sure
that she’ll budge.
This girl can’t hold a grudge;
she’s gentle and kind
at her core.
She’ll thaw in a trice;
just a day – maybe thrice –
several days,
or a week…
mayhap more.

Three Mile Island – Condensed (2016 April PAD - Day 3)

Three Mile Island – Condensed
(a found poem)

An accident
March 28, 1979
nuclear reactor number 2
mechanical failures
compounded by
inadequate training,
 human factors and
human-computer interaction;
ambiguous indicators,
hidden lights,
manual override of
automatic emergency
cooling systems,
failure of auxiliary system,
emergency shutdown,
pumps closed for maintenance,
relief valve stuck open,
mechanical fault,
coolant system depressurization,
partial core melt,
user interface engineering problems,
design fundamentally flawed,
cycle of assumptions,
considerable confusion,
boiling inside the core,
alarm sounded,
indications initially ignored,
large part of core melted,
system dangerously radioactive,
vented straight to the atmosphere.
Schools closed, residents warned.
Lessons learned:
Normal Accident Theory:
inevitable consequence
of system’s immense complexity
