Let’s Plant Flowers
This solitary grave, untended
windblown, no name, unknown –
a number only, looking so
lonely, settled in beside our family
a stranger? or a relative perhaps?
or maybe a friend, too far from home
new country, no money, all alone
no one here to mourn, nor a single
flower to decorate, and yet
here we are, and
we have extra
This is so sad, but it's very thoughtful of you to place your extra flowers there. When a friend of mine died (suicide), her husband didn't have any kind of headstone made and I couldn't stand it. So my husband and I got one for her.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting, Laurie -- and what a sweet gesture, getting a headstone for your friend! It IS sad, and hits close to home for me -- from both sides. One the one hand, there are "unknowns" nearby our family that I plant flowers for sometimes; on the other hand, we have family members, buried a generation or two before, without any headstone, that we have been unable to locate. I like to image someone pausing to notice and decorate there too. :-]
