Cool Today,
Un-cool Tomorrow
Let us bustle
today
through
decades
of accoutrements
from
confining collars,
laces and
ties,
corsets and
bows,
hats, hooks
and eyes,
v-necks and
trains,
faux (or
real) fox-fur collars,
bangles and
bracelets
tattoos and
piercings.
Let’s step
through time
from narrow
shoes
and lace up
boots
to T-straps,
sandals,
wedgies,
saddle shoes,
ballerina
slippers,
go-go boots,
penny loafers,
designer
athletic
footwear and
flip-flops;
go from bound
in hobble
skirts,
to liberated flappers,
minis-, midis-,
maxis;
baggy
trousers to tight pants
(and back);
let’s traverse
the map – Hawaiian
shirts,
Bermuda
shorts;
let’s suit up
in pant suits,
power suits,
leisure suits
(all wholly
unsuitable)
with feathers and hats
from hair to there
in upsweeps, bobs
and bobby pins,
pageboys, pixies,
pompadours,
pigtails, ponytails
beehives, big hair
and color ourselves
pink, purple,
blue, and grey.
And the only thing
anyone can honestly say
(beyond any shadow
of a doubt)
is that whatever’s in
today
will some day
be out.
